Aug 04, 2018 Upon startup of Linux database get ORA-27102: out of memory Linux-X8664 Error: 28: No space left on device (Doc ID 301830.1) Last updated on AUGUST 04, 2018. Applies to: Oracle Database - Enterprise Edition - Version 9.2.0.1 and later Linux x86-64 Symptoms. Normally, /tmp is just a part of the root (/) filesystem, no separate mount is needed, unless there are special circumstances, like running out of root filespace (when some daemon creates the one you see), or maybe you have / on a very slow media (like an USB flash stick) and want /tmp in ram for performance, even with limited space. Although Linux OS command disk free ('df -h') shows enough free space for the particular mountpoint: Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on /dev/sda1 63G 25G 36G 41% /.

Symptoms
When trying to increase the SGA to approach half available RAM with an Oracle 64-bit version on a Linux 64-bit operating system, even though SHMMAX is set to match half the amount of RAM, you get the following error when trying to start the instance:
SQL> startup nomount
ORA-27102: out of memory
Linux-x86_64 Error: 28: No space left on device
